Girard, Stephen
(20 may. 1750, Burdeos, Francia –26 dic. 1831, Filadelfia, Pa., EE.UU.).

Financista y filántropo norteamericano nacido en Francia. Se hizo marinero a los 14 años de edad y en 1774 ya era capitán de un barco mercante francés que participaba en el comercio entre la costa norteamericana y las Antillas. Durante la guerra de independencia de los Estados Unidos de América se instaló en Filadelfia y reanudó el comercio en 1783. Formó una eficiente flota mercante mundial y reunió una fortuna. En 1812 compró el Banco de los Estados Unidos de América y le cambió el nombre por el de Banco de Stephen Girard. Durante la guerra anglo-estadounidense (1812) compró bonos del gobierno, los que en 1814 ya constituían el 95% de la deuda de guerra de EE.UU. Legó su fortuna a diversas instituciones de beneficencia, entre ellas el Stephen Girard College para huérfanos varones (fundado en 1833).
